Helping Your Kids To Adjust To Change

When we found out that we were going to be moving to a new country for my husband's job, I could tell that my kids were more than a little freaked out. We talked with them at length about the transition, but they were really apprehensive about accepting the change. However, after we talked with a few other parents who had been through the same thing, we learned great coping mechanisms that would help them. We showed them pictures of our new place, and explained interesting local customs. After awhile, they started to warm up to the idea. My blog is about helping you to teach your kids to adjust to change, so that they aren't left struggling with a difficult transition.

Organize The Contents Of A Self-Storage Unit

If you have recently inherited items that are currently stowed away inside of a self-storage unit, use the following steps to organize the contents of the unit. Taking inventory and setting up a sorting station will help you declutter the contents.

The Initial Assessment

Bring a pen and a pad of paper with you during the initial assessment of the contents. Write down what types of items you observe, including details about whether or not the items are packed in cartons or displayed loose. This list will guide you in shopping for totes, corrugated containers, and other essentials that will be needed to organize the items.

During the initial assessment, determine how much room you will have to sort through the items. If the storage unit is filled to capacity, you may prefer to sort the items outdoors. In this case, you will need a drop cloth or another protective cover to lay items on while you are performing the sorting process.

The Sorting Process

After you have examined the list you made, shop for the materials you need to sort the contents of the storage unit. Then, head over to the unit and set up the totes and boxes that you will be using.

You may encounter some items that you would like to dispose of. The storage facility may feature dumpsters or waste receptacles that you can use to place items that you are discarding.

If you will need to sort through many items, break up the sorting process into several segments. Clean out one section of the storage unit in its entirety. Then, designate other days to clean out the rest of the unit.

The Labels And Transport Tips

Decide if the items that you have stored in plastic totes or cardboard boxes will be donated, sold, or kept. Use labels to identify the contents, plus outline what you intend to do with the items. Once you have sorted and rearranged everything that was originally stored in the unit, transport the items that you are going to be getting rid of.

The Contents Of The Unit

Place the other containers and boxes back in the unit. If you would like to continue renting the unit, fill out a rental agreement at the storage facility. Use the unit to store the items that you have inherited, plus any of your own personal possessions that you do not have adequate room to store in your home.
